1. Accuracy
This is the single most obvious factor that many callers overlook when speaking with our case managers. Accuracy comes from collection procedures, laboratory equipment and testing methodology, and human decision making on the part of laboratory technicians. Not all tests are created equal. Providing accurate DNA tests is expensive. Cheaper tests may not be accurate.
2. Court Admissibility
Lots of people have uncertainty about a situation involving paternity. They want the easiest and most inexpensive way to gain peace of mind. For some, that's fine. For others, it may be worth considering a court admissible test. The reason is simple. If you find out you're not the father, and you've taken a home DNA test, you may still be responsible for child support. If there is any question that you may need to show results for legal reasons like birth certificate, child support, or custody, consider spending a bit more money on a legally admissible test. Cheap paternity tests are generally not court admissible.
3. Customer Support
Try calling a company you just bought a $80 test from and speaking with someone who can locate your case within 10 minutes. Good luck. Companies that offer cheap testing cut their costs by eliminating customer support. To many, it is nice to be able to speak with a real person who knows the exact situation and can answer any questions or concerns in a timely manner.
If you have uncertainty and are looking to purchase a paternity test, then you have dozens of options. You can buy a test for as little as $79, if you are looking for the cheapest. Most people are looking for peace of mind, and based on the factors above, I'm not sure you'll get that with a cheap paternity test.
