Sometimes, for purely personal reasons or for legal reasons, the parentage of the child may be called into question. When this happens, the only way to find out for sure who the father of the baby is by going for paternity tests. Paternity DNA testing is the only sure way to take away all the doubt surrounding this problem and it is probably the only route to take.

Of course, it may not be just to find out the parentage of a child that these evaluations are done. In kidnap cases for example, a child who has been missing for some years may not be recognizable to other family members. In this case, legal reasons come to the fore particularly if the child is inheriting property from deceased members of the family. Existing members of the family will be evaluated and then compared to the child or adult to check if they are indeed family members.

Of course, another occasion when this evaluating has to be done is when bodies are discovered after being missing for some time. Very often it is only this type of evaluation that will lead to identifying the person. Police of course have their own labs which carry out these evaluations, but for the man in the street there are private companies who undertake this kind of work.

What happens is, in the case of parenthood for example, a sample is taken from the child and the father. This can be a buccal test, a swab taken from the inside of the cheek, blood or hair samples. Each has a genetic code that will show the lineage of the child and the lab will be able to rule out any doubt whom is the father. These evaluations are almost one hundred per cent correct so the parents can be sure that the child belongs to them.

Again, if the case is to go to court, the evaluations need to be done with a disinterested third party to make sure that there is no bias. This means that a lawyer, clinician or lab must prove that the evaluation was done in an accurate manner and that no tampering with the evidence occurred.

There have been some home evaluation kits that came onto the market which means that the mother or father can carry out the evaluations themselves. Even grandparents can be proved and this makes life a lot easier if doubt has been thrown onto the lineage of the child.

Most modern day labs will provide a one stop service to those who want to prove parentage of a child. There are different levels of service, depending on what is required, but most levels fall within easily affordable ranges for the every day family. Although the cost of doing these evaluations used to be very high at one time, they are now so common that the cost has come down quite significantly. It may be better to get this evaluation done whenever there is doubt over who fathered the child.
